20 hp kohler v twin

Key: AdminGlobal ModMod. Print Thread. Its about a ten year old engine that was basically had routine maintainence with Sears. It was running fine until recently and it still starts easily but surges or gallops at any throttle setting.

I cleaned the air filter, no change, I bought a new fuel filter that I haven't installed yet. What else should I look at? A hvy eqmt mechanic said champion plugs don't do very well in small engines! Check fuek air mixture, I have a 20 year old Ctaftsman with 18hp Kohler.

The engine idle would "roll" up and down on me. Finally figured out the spring that provide tension to the mixture screw was weak, new spring and all fixed. Quote: Check fuek air mixture, I have a 20 year old Ctaftsman with 18hp Kohler. I doubt it was the spring itself. More likely your removing the needle in order to replace the spring dislodged some debris in that sensitive passage, allowing the carb to function normally.

The spring only provides resistance to the threaded joint between the needle and body, reducing it's tendency to turn.

Surging is never caused by the governor or throttle springs. Surging is a result of an obstruction in the fuel system, typically in the idle or transition circuit. When the engine achieves the target RPM, the throttle is closed, mostly, by the governor to prevent overspeed. When the throttle is closed, fuel is drawn primarily thru the idle circuit.

If that circuit is clogged, the mixture goes lean, the engine stumbles, the rpm fall, the governor opens the throttle, the engine recovers, repeat ad nauseum. The proper fix is to service the carb. With an engine that is running right now, albeit poorly, Seafoam in-tank about double ratio on bottle will probably clear things up for you. Failing that, disassembly and cleaning are best.

The linkage would stick slightly in one direction, then over-compensate the other way. That's alot of crud! The only mechanical governor problem I've had is my wood chipper's governor being jammed open by the occasional wood chip. Has happened 3x.

Worth looking at, though! Quote: That's alot of crud! Wasn't all that much. My guess he'd tried lubing it over the last year or so with oil I have found many times that the surging is caused by weak or stretched governor springs. Many engines have two governor springs, one for governed idle and another for governed high speed. The governor itself rarely is the problem. Print Thread Switch to Threaded Mode. How big can we go with these bores? With the HP engines the largest over-bore you can go is 3. You can bore out the existing sleeve in the engine or re-sleeve it to the larger bore.

If you want to go to a 3. These bigger bores will also require stud-ing the block. How much can these blocks take? Based upon our experience, if your engine is making over 90 ft-lbs of torque - you are running on borrowed time. What size connecting rods are used?

Will there be clearance issues with the stroker crank? One caveat of running the stroker crank with a larger lift cam can be the connecting rod clearance past the cam lobes.Forums New posts Search forums.

MWSC FAQs: V-Twin Kohler Command 18-30 HP Engines

Kohler Courage V twin 20 hp. Thread starter blackscooby Start date Sep 13, Was given this Cub Cadet mower with a Kohler Courage V twin 20hp engine that will turn over until it reaches full compression and stops. The guy I got it from had recent put a new starter motor on it only to find the same problem. He said it has issue with compression release valve. Can anyone tell me how big of a job it is to replace this release valve.

The engine has only got hrs on it but it is about years old was stored for 6 years only been using again the last few months Cheers. Post your Kohler engine model number so the correct manual can be found. Here is one service manual for a 20hp Courage as an example. Go to oage 56 for a full explanation. Thread starter rjtlawncare Start date May 14, Kohler Command 20hp CV Was on a exmark turf tracer. Has about hours, Has not been run in about 3 years Yesterday I started it up and it runs.

The Problem: 1. When I bring it up to full throttle it start to backfire and will continue to backfire about one backfire per 5 to 10 sec.

When it's backfiring it also surges alittle. I have a rpm meter on it and it doesn't lose rpm when backfiring or surging? I would think it would lose some rpm's? When I put my hand over the air intake outlet just restricting it a little it will stop backfiring.ZT 25hp Confidant, kohler 2 cylinder engine from a dixie chopper. Problems with Kohler Command Thread starter DrewRiley Start date Jul 4, DrewRiley Forum Newbie. Joined Jul 4, Threads 3 Messages 7. I posted this in the small engine forum as well, before I realized there was a Kohler sub-forum. Mods, feel free to merge if necessary: Hello all, Hopefully the following doesn't drone on for too long, but I want to be thorough with details: Recently I was given an older Zipper-TS zero turn with a Kohler Command 20 in it.

The original owner stated it had electrical problems that he couldn't figure out, which ultimately turned out to be just combo of a stuck fuel solenoid, a couple of bad ignition coils, and I had to bypass one of the safety switches from the engine. Once that was taken care of, the engine fired up and ran great, until I saw oil blowing out all over the motor.

From what I could see on a few different seals and gaskets that were easily accessible, many of them seemed to be cracked or dried out, so I bought a full seal kit and replaced nearly every seal and o-ring on the entire engine.

Ultimately, everything went back together, and everything seemed to start up and run fine with no more oil leaks. I mowed my entire 2 acre lot with no trouble, and parked the mower for the week.

I might add that this motor does seem to run quite hot, and does not have the optional oil cooler, but that seems to be standard with this Command engines from what I've read. The next time I tried to start the mower, it had some trouble starting, and seemed to be losing compression after the first couple attempts to get the engine to start. It seems like it would try to start firing, but then there would all of a sudden be zero compression.

If I waited a couple of minutes, I would get compression again, and get a couple of chances to restart. Finally on about the 4th or 5th try, I got the motor to start and pulled the mower around the side of the house to the front of my garage.
